Pine Mountain Observatory (pt2)

<JPN>

This is the second part of our visit to Pine Mountain Observatory. (1st part here)

This night sky wasn't like anything I have ever seen before. I am from Osaka (the second biggest city in Japan), and the city lights never go off. Because of this, I grew up seeing only the major stars (maybe just a few in the sky on a good day). In the sky here at PMO, you can see the Milky Way very clearly, and the constellations in the sky are something you thought you could only see on your iPad app.

This was our first time taking photos of the night sky, and I think we got pretty decent photos considering. However, these do not do justice to just how incredible this night was. Apparently, at the time of our visit, smoke from Canada was already coming in, and it wasn't as clear as it can usually be. (Are you kidding me?? It was amazing even so!!) My friends came here last year, and described that they felt like they need to dodge the stars because it was so clear and felt they were very close.

I would certainly go back there next year to see this clear night view. Because of the possibility of wildfires, I would suggest you visit this place in June. Also, make sure to go on or close to a new moon for the darkest skies and best view of the stars. Check their website for their open hours. Also, they want you to call them ahead of time for availability if you are bringing 8 people or more.

If you are trying out beautiful night sky camping, why not make this place your next destination!

Oregon Coast

<JPN>

Oregon Coast

The Oregon coast is a fantastic place to let your dog exercise because there are relatively few people and dogs unless there is an event (like a motorcycle or vintage car show, which seem to happen semi-frequently).

For those who are into driving/riding, highway 101 is very recommended. This road is right by the coast, and not too curvy so people need to worry about.

This day, we visited Baker beach which is close to Florence. This is on 101, and by a horse back riding trail. Since this beach less popular than others closer to downtown Florence, we did not have anybody around us for 2 hours. It was great for us to relax, and for me to practice taking pictures. (Lisa is becoming my personal mentor).

One thing I learned about the Oregon coast is that it is incredibly cold even in summer. (These photos were taken at the end of summer when Eugene was still very hot.) It is definitely not a place to wear cool swimsuits and bikinis and show off the bod, but the PNW is not really that kind of place to begin with. For those who enjoy the atmosphere of PNW, the Oregon coast is massively recommended.

Blue Pool Hiking

<JPN>

Beauty of nature

I have been traveling around Oregon to see what this place offers. Today, I went to Blue Pool for some inspiration. This place starts with about 40 mins - 1 hour of hiking, and then you are presented with an amazingly beautiful, blue pool of water.

I had just came back from a trip to Japan, and I was physically exhausted. To be honest, I wasn’t quite sure if waking up early and walking 2 hours (going up and coming back) was worth it until I experienced just how beautiful this hike was and how amazing the view of Blue Pool was. Especially coming back from Osaka where you don’t see much greenery, this place took my breath away.

Nature is just increadibly beautiful. I used to like spending time surrounded by artificial structures, and I still think there is a place for that. But, there is something about being in a place that took a few centuries to form.

Life is too short! I am ready to witness all the beautiful places in this world!!

Weekend Motorcycle River Ride

Weekend Motorcycle Ride Up to North Mckenzie River

We headed north on the Mckenzie River on my motorcycle. (Lisa took our car with our dog.)  It was such a blast going up there on winding roads with beautiful nature to look at while riding.

Motorcycles might not be the safest but it's so much fun, and it gives you a different connection to nature from any other vehicle via sight, smell, and wind that wants to blow you off of the motorcycle.

<JPN>

Look how Lisa struggles to keep Sophie in our frame. It's not easy to keep your dog in the frame while said dog is extremely distracted. Ah, joy of having an untrained dog!

<JPN>

。。かな!

Hope everyone is having great adventures!!

Smithsonian - Washington D.C.

DSC04608Today's post is a guest post by @rosesandsaffron!

Recently I took a trip to Washington D.C. and had a chance to visit some of the Smithsonian museums as well as famous landmarks. It was SO much fun!! I ended up coming back to the mall again for another day of wandering around. I've been to the various Smithsonian museums several times over the years actually, and yet I never get tired of them.There's still so much more I want to see. This trip featured a brief stop in Air and Space and a much longer stop in Natural History. Naturally I brought my camera along, and I hope you'll enjoy the pictures!

DSC04608DSC04611

From the air and space museum - not the actual lunar landing module but one built just like it that never made it up into space, and...a plane that I embarrassingly forgot the name of. Can anyone help me out?

DSC04619

From the marine life exhibit at the Natural History museum. This exhibit featured a lot of cool things - there was also a real (preserved, not alive) giant squid. I took a picture of that too but it looked like something out the X-Files so it didn't make it to public consumption.

DSC04620DSC04624

The open area right when you come in the museum. I LOVE elephants - I think they are such amazing, kind, intelligent animals. So, guess what I took a lot of time taking pictures of!

DSC04626

The bones exhibit was surprisingly cool - look at the snake ribs!!

DSC04629

The is a mummified bull. The info said it would have been considered sacred and taken care of very well. Who among the people and animals at that time would have ever thought it would have ended up unearthed and in a museum thousands of years later?

DSC04631DSC04637

The dino fossil exhibit was sadly under renovation, but I still got to see a few. I have so many more photos to dig through and post - there was an amazing exhibit on rocks, minerals, and gemstones I spent a lot of time in too! Plus other pictures from around Washington D.C. and in Virginia, so look forward to some more guests posts from me!

Oregon Country Fair - Unique Acceptance

DSC04955DSC05033

<ENG> This is my third time to visit the Oregon Country Fair. This place is so unique, and nothing (that I have experienced) comes close to the experience I have in this place. This place has a unique atmosphere where you feel that anything goes. People are very kind and friendly, and they are willing to accept anything that you want to be.

DSC04841DSC04853DSC04874

<ENG>As soon as you goes through the entrance, there is just beautiful nature and trails where you find a tons of booths with hand-crafted accessaries and outfits. They can be slightly pricy but it’s understandable when you think about how much time they might have spent to craft them. Each booth reminded me of the Saturday Market in downtown Eugene. It's just bigger, and the Country Fair trails seem to be the perfect fit for the whimisical items for sale.

There is music everywhere, and many people dresss up for this event. (You might have more fun dressing up yourself to really embrace the fair atmosphere, but this is not a requirement by any means. Like I said earlier, they are very accepting.)

DSC04949DSC04952DSC04970DSC05010DSC05021DSC04818DSC05040DSC05073DSC05098DSC05099

<ENG>This is a very unique place where one can truly be themselves. Do you want to dress up to be a character from DragonBall? Go for it! You’ve always wanted to be topless in public but are too self-conscious because you are not perfectly fit? Who cares! I have seen all kinds of people at this event. Everyone seems to truly enjoy the diversity, and seems to appreciate each individaul for who they are.

First time I was at this place at the age of 21, I thought I had a bigger cultural shock than when I came to the United States. However, now that I am older, I felt like there is a lot to like about this place, the atmosphere, and the general spirit. I’m already looking forwad to visiting again next year!
