Lisa's Pick: Sunset on the McKenzie

McKenzie River, OR

On our way back from a star-viewing trip (which was the most magical photography experience of my entire life so far, but that's a story for another, much longer post) we stopped off somewhere along the McKenzie River to see the sunset. I took this picture by nearly laying my camera in the water, and I don't have an articulating screen so there was a lot of guesswork happening. It seems like guesswork sometimes pays off, because I really like the result here. I think the focus transition between background, middle ground, and foreground give the photo depth, and I love the gold light from the sunset reflected off the water, which just looks so liquid. Of course water IS a liquid, but here you can really see how it flows and moves. Here are my settings:

Camera: Nikon D610

Lens: 50 mm

Exposure: 1/1600

ISO: 400

Aperture: 7.1

White Balance: Auto

This picture makes me want to walk into the water like some kind of fantastical river selkie, slipping into the amber sunset waves.
